Health Insurance for International Students in Korea



  Foreign students can also enroll in health insurance covered by the Health Insurance Act upon their application.

◇ Health insurance enrollment targets and procedures

☞ Foreign students who meet all of the following qualifications can apply for regional membership qualifications at the National Health Insurance Corporation and become eligible for regional health insurance.

· You must not be a subscriber to work health insurance.
· It must be obvious that you have lived in Korea for more than 6 months or more than 6 months for reasons such as studying abroad.
· A person who has been registered as an alien in accordance with Article 31 of the Immigration Control Act and has a status of residence according to Table 9 of the 「Enforcement Rule of the National Health Insurance Act」

☞ In order for foreign students with a status of residence (D-2) to enroll in health insurance, the following documents must be submitted to the National Health Insurance Corporation along with a report on the qualification and change of health insurance for local subscribers.

· A copy of alien registration card or one copy of alien registration fact
· One copy of admission or enrollment certificate

◇ Criteria for calculating health insurance premiums

☞ Health insurance premiums for foreign students are calculated based on the average premium per household of local subscribers at the end of the previous year.

☞ If the status of residence is for studying abroad (D-2), the premium is reduced by 50%.
